The Stegosaurus, often called the walking fortress of the late Jurassic period, is the latest addition to the Ugears dinosaur collectionjoining the Triceratops in this dynamic range of wooden automatons. With its iconic double row of bony plates and a spiked, mace-like tail, the Stegosaurus remains one of the most recognisable dinosaurs in the fossil record.
Roaming the plains of North America and Europe around 150 million years ago, these herbivores stood up to 4 metres tall, stretched 6 metres long, and weighed nearly 4 metric tonnes. Stegosaurians were dedicated plant-eaters, likely feeding on ferns, mosses, and cycads. Despite their peaceful diet, they were far from defenceless. Those sharp tail spikesup to a metre longcould deliver serious damage. In fact, fossil evidence shows a Stegosaurus may have injured an Allosaurus, with a tail spike fitting perfectly into damaged vertebrae. These spikes are now famously known as thagomizers, a term inspired by The Far Side cartoonist Gary Larson.
The Ugears Stegosaurus is a spring-driven, four-legged wooden automaton capable of walking up to one metre on a single wind. Wind the model using the key located in its bellyeach side has a winding slot for easy use. The Start/Stop switch is cleverly integrated into a bony shoulder plate. Push it back, wind the key (up to ten half-turns), place your dino on a flat surface, slide the switch forward, and watch it lumber off. An eccentric gear causes the tail to sway in time with the legs, creating a lifelike walking motion.
Designed with educational detail, the Stegosaurus features overlapping plates arranged in the double row currently favoured by palaeontologists. While their true functiondefence, thermoregulation, or courtshipis still debated, using one as a functional control is a clever twist.
Rated Medium difficulty, the kit includes 305 parts and offers over 8 hours of engaging build time. No glue or special tools are neededjust snap the high-quality wooden pieces together, and follow the illustrated instructions. Use the included sandpaper and wax to smooth and lubricate the moving parts, ensuring your Stegosaurus walks smoothly.
Perfect for curious kids and dino-loving adults, this hands-on model is a great way to spark interest in natural history and mechanical design. Pair it with the Triceratops and Tyrannosaurus Rex models to complete your prehistoric collection.
